Spriggs Excavation, Inc. expanded a substation for Xcel Energy near Denver, Colorado, in December 2024. The scope included demolishing existing fencing and structures, stripping topsoil, performing cut-and-fill operations, excavating a detention pond and coordinating concrete pours for a stormwater trickle channel. The project entailed moving more than 12,000 cubic yards of dirt on-site and exporting over 30,000 cubic yards off-site. Spriggs delivered all civil scopes, including a new perimeter fence, expanded the site entrance for safe truck access along a busy highway and integrated daily with live substation operations around underground and overhead utilities. These unique challenges required daily precision and adaptability.
Neptune Substation & BESS
August 2022 - Brink Constructors / NextEra Energy
In August 2022, Spriggs Excavation, Inc. completed the Neptune Substation and battery energy storage system yard for NextEra Energy. The package included installation of all underground utilities, site regrading and placement of surface aggregates. At the substation, Spriggs installed the grounding grid, conduit and cable trench, regraded the site and placed surface rock. Multiple conduit runs required flow-fill, backfill and jigs, with the runs connecting to the control building. Custom bending of conduit on-site ensured seamless connection within the electrical infrastructure.
Young Substation
December 2022 - Brink Constructors / NextEra Energy
Spriggs Excavation, Inc. executed the civil scope for the Young Substation, servicing a major wind farm, in December 2022. Faced with a solid rock surface, the team blasted the pad and sub-excavated six feet of blasted rock, processed the material through a crusher and reused the material as base fill. Spriggs installed the grounding grid before completing the final lift of aggregate and completed stormwater management with french drains and piping around the pad.
